Exterior Lighting Workshop: Twilight to Bigsun

Today we had a workshop on lighting for exterior spaces to experiment with under & over exposure of both the subject & background
Equipment List.
  • H1D, Medium/Large format camera (with leaf shutter)
  • Tethered Shooting: H1D Fw800-400, H3d FW800-800
  • Non-Tethered Shooting: Imagebank battery
  • Broncolor mobil kit
  • Lighting stand and a sand bag
  • Light shaper: Small soft box or reflector and large honeycomb
  • Lightmeter
  • Tripod
  • External sync lead or pocket wizard/radio slave
  • 1/2 tough spun
When taking out a kit for exterior shooting Jonathan advised us to always perform a system check before taking the kit offsite as there may be problems such as low battery power which can be resolved before leaving.

The Power of the flash dictates how bright the model is rendered.
The Shutter Speed  dictates how bright or dark the space/background is rendered.
The Aperture dictates how bright or dark the overall image is rendered.

The faster the shutter speed the darker the background.
Jonathan gaves us different examples of photographers who used lighting strongly in exterior spaces when working with models:
Finlay Mackay
Rineke Djikstra

Annie Leibovitz

The following images are the result of our shoot today, we did a series experimenting with different shutter speeds; the background density highlights the different shutter settings. Due to the weather being very bright it is very obvious what the effects of under & over exposing the backdrop can have on the look of the weather conditions.
