Fashion: Constructed Image: The Pitch

After doing our pitch today Jonathan & Sam raised a series of questions & issues that we either had not mentioned or had not discussed already:

  • Reference architecture, where are we- continent, location, lower/upper class?
  • Although we had not mentioned this, in previous tutorials with Sam we had highlighted a European low end hotel room location.
  • Reference fashion designers, clothing of the era?
  • In response to this we have started to look at more 60s inspired shoots as well as exploring Vogue magazines from the 1960s as well as modern Vogue China, Japan & North/South Korean covers that are inspired by 60s fashion.
  • Soft fabric- could highlight seduction, allure, sexual tension, possible vulnerability, dominane, the woman can be empowered as well as sexualised- is she a temptress, manipulating the situation?
  • Jonathan also discussed beginning to explore mannerisms of the two characters to highlight their relationship- gestural vocabulary which will also be influenced by research material.
  • We will organise a time when both models are free to practice styling etc. as well as being able to photograph them together & begin to explore the gestures & relationship between the two characters.
  • The question of the male models clothing was also raised- we discussed not having him dressed like a James Bond agent but rather having him as an unsuspecting character like an accountant or possibly a member of the hotel staff such as a bellboy or a receptionist dressed in something less formal or maybe tweed- possibly young, naive?
  • We also discussed the female model a little- really start to consider fake eyelashes? Lipstick colour? etc.
  • JS & SC also said we needed to revisit lighting, wattage, what sort of street light we would have due to the urban location? Depth of field? Uni-directional light to raise up the aperture and then use key lighting to create a hierachy- lamp light to highlight the female, the documents etc.
  • JS also said that by Friday we should draw out a lighting plan in more thorough detail with the correct scale.
  • We also must continue to consider the size of the window as well as the possible use and need for brick work around the window.
