Fashion: Constructed Image: Fashion, Hair & Make-up

After doing our casting we have had a group meeting to discuss who we want to be our models. We have chosen Simon Nakach who we know will be free on the dates of the shoot & Estephenie Standen who we have to confirm her availability with.

We felt that these two people will work well in an image together while giving off the feel of an Eastern vs. Western conflict. We have also chosen the female model not only for her appearance but because she has an above average height for her nationality while the male model has been chosen because he isn't to tall which will not dwarf the woman.

We have been consulting with three Fashion students who have offered themselves to help out with styling our models, the fashion, hair & make-up. Tom williams, Suzanne Nicolson & Maria Leao have started to help by making mood boards of certain materials used mainly in the 1960s as well as colour swatches.

We have started to consider certain colours, at first looking only at red attire & accessories as demonstrated through the designs that Tom drew for us.

However we then began to look more at the combination of reds and golds for the female model to highlight the idea of danger as well as emphasising her Asian nationality which adds to the East vs. West concept. We plan to dress the male model in a dark suit base of the genres style which will further emphasise the time period; but also because we have decided that the female model's fashion will be the main focus of the image therefore we do not want his fashion to take main focus. At some point soon we as a group with our fashion consultants plan to travel to Brick Lane to find some clothing which will fit our criteria which will fit or can be altered to fit and suit our models.

Tom has also offered to do our mode'ls hair as he was a hairdresser therefore on the weekend he did some experimenting with Suzi's hair to give the group an example of what sort of style would have be worn at this time.

We all really liked the hairstyle however obviously on the day of the shoot the style would be sleeker and the beehive would be higher up on the head as this was the effect that women went for in the 60s.

After Tom did the hair, Maria then experimented with the style of make-up often worn in the 60s; she went with a simple skin tone, dark eye shadow with a thin black eyeline on the eye lid and lightly around the rest of the eye. She also used a pink/red lipstick which I believe needs to be much more of a crimson to emphasise the beauty of the lips as well as reflecting the painting on the wall of the blue-faced girl.

I also think that fake eye lashes need to be used to reflect the make-up of the era as well as exaggerating the shape & size of the eyes.

Obviously once we have confirmed our model we will need to test out the hair and make-up on her as it will probably need tweeking due to differences in skin tone, hair & eye colouring & other facial features; however so far I feel confident in this area of the fashion section of the unit.
